One of the most active local preservation organizations in the area is the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, which dedicates itself to preserving local sites.  This past Halloween marked the second year I was able to volunteer as a tour guide for NHF’s Haunted History Tour.  I worked at one of three sites on the tour, the American Cemetery on Second Street in Natchitoches.  This cemetery is likely one of the oldest in the Louisiana Purchase, with the oldest marked burial dating back to 1796.  My duties as tour guide included: introducing visitors to the site, telling them about the work that NHF does in the area (and letting them know that their ticket purchase helps support these efforts), pointing notable features and persons in the site, and directing them to each vignette along the route.

In return for our service, NHF kindly awarded me and my fellow students with an honorary student membership for 2010.  Below is an image of the certificate:
